E’ il sogno di una educazione euro-mediterranea del Gonzaga Campus per rispondere in senso ampio ai bisogni della società locale ed internazionale.
PALERMO – Proprio a partire dal forte impegno di 12 giovani, per la prima volta, si realizza il sogno di una formazione internazionale euro-mediterranea in Sicilia e nel sud Italia; sono infatti i primi diplomati del Gonzaga International School Palermo (ISP). Alcuni di loro sono studenti all’ISP dal 2008, anno nel quale l’International School è stata fondata dalla Compagnia di Gesù, nell’ambito del progetto dell’Istituto Gonzaga. All’interno della missione educativa dei gesuiti, da sempre orientata all’internazionalità, la scelta di aprire una scuola internazionale IB proprio a Palermo deriva dalla consapevole determinazione di offrire un servizio importante per i giovani del sud e per quanti vogliono aggiungersi alla grande sfida di formarsi all’insegna della multiculturalità, interreligiosità e cittadinanza globale.
I giovani impegnati, sono, oltre che italiani, ragazzi e ragazze del Bangladesh, Filippine, Sri Lanka, Stati Uniti, Germania, Brasile.
Il Diploma Program IB della scuola internazionale, rivolto a studenti di età tra i 16 e i 18 anni, è nato 1968 infatti con lo scopo di formare un mondo di pace e solidarietà ed è oggi universalmente riconosciuto come un programma che consente l’ingresso in tutte le maggiori università italiane e del mondo. Unica scuola accreditata dall’International Baccalaureate nell’Italia meridionale, l’ISP, attraverso l’utilizzo dell’inglese come prima lingua d’insegnamento e di una pedagogia attiva e coinvolgente, vuole formare cittadini del mondo, aperti e solidali, pronti alle sfide di una società sempre più globale e interconnessa.
Il Gonzaga ISP è così una scuola internazionale IB, che propone un percorso scolastico completo, dai 2 ai 18 anni e che offre un prestigioso titolo finale di scuola secondaria di secondo grado (ai sensi della legge n.738 del 1996) riconosciuto in Italia come diploma di liceo scientifico o di liceo delle scienze umane, valido sia per l’accesso all’Università in Italia e all’estero sia per la partecipazione ai concorsi pubblici.
A parlare della sua esperienza è il giovane Francesco Salamone che ci riassume le caratteristiche principali dell’High School dell’ISP.
“In questi anni ho intrapreso un percorso davvero molto particolare perché, rispetto alla scuola italiana è stato strutturato in un modo tale da dare molta indipendenza a noi ragazzi. Ci è stata offerta la possibilità di studiare alcune materie con una impostazione di approfondimento avanzata in grado di essere collegata al mondo reale. Ad esempio abbiamo fatto dei progetti di ricerca personali collegandoli ad eventi del mondo reale. Nel mio caso, in particolare, ho realizzato una ricerca, in tema di business, sulle teorie motivazionali al lavoro, prendendo in considerazione aziende di tutto il mondo. C’è stata una grandissima apertura proprio nel metodo dell’insegnamento – ha continuato il giovane – verso i diversi paesi e le culture del mondo; i diversi temi, infatti, sono stati affrontati globalmente nella prospettiva ampia di diventare dei futuri cittadini del mondo. Ci siamo formati pure per una migliore analisi e riflessione, infatti, su quelle che sono le strade e le possibili soluzioni per affrontare i problemi del mondo”.
Personalizzazione, protagonismo nel processo di apprendimento e di crescita, apertura al mondo e alle diverse culture sono tra i tratti più distintivi del progetto pedagogico del Gonzaga International School Palermo.
Gli studenti del diploma nel loro programma di studi, hanno inserito pure l’impegno sociale e solidale. Aiutare chi ha bisogno per essere dei buoni cittadini del mondo, impegnati per migliorare la società è uno degli elementi cardine del progetto.
Gli studenti, infatti, sono coinvolti in attività di volontariato nazionale ed internazionale in Kenya, in Romania e in alcune realtà della città.
“Un aspetto significativo è stato, inoltre, l’impegno sociale inserito dentro il nostro percorso di studi. Molti miei compagni hanno fatto esperienze molto belle di volontariato fuori. Io non ho avuto modo di fare questa esperienza anche a causa della pandemia; ho fatto, però, online una esperienza simile di volontariato con una azienda no-profit americana di supporto al lutto per bambini e adolescenti. Tutto ciò mi ha permesso di conoscere come entrare in queste forme di aiuto verso gli altri. Adesso continuerò a studiare per conoscere i grandi sistemi e per cercare di rispondere sempre partendo dai piccoli. Per il futuro sto per partire per l’America perchè andrò a studiare Economia e Finanza a Philadelphia nell’università della Pennsylvania”.
P. Denora: la nostra scuola, crocevia di popoli e culture, nel cuore del Mediterraneo
“Con questi nostri 12 giovani appena diplomati realizziamo davvero un sogno che ci spinge a continuare nella nostra mission. La bellezza di questa terra di Sicilia deriva proprio da un incontro di culture diverse nel centro del Mediterraneo – dice p. Vitangelo Denora, Direttore Generale del Gonzaga Campus – che oggi può essere riproposto con rinnovato coraggio e determinazione. Il nostro desiderio forte è quello di attrarre studenti in Sicilia da tutto il mondo ed in particolare dal sud, dal mediterraneo. Come gesuiti, nei nostri percorsi educativi, crediamo molto nella formazione di persone che con competenza, coscienza, compassione e impegno cercheranno di rispondere, in una prospettiva ampia, ai bisogni della società locale ed internazionale. Il Programma IB ci da tutti gli strumenti concreti per realizzare questo nostro ideale”.
Una opportunità aperta a tutti
La scuola internazionale, negli ultimi anni, si sta impegnando per essere sempre più accessibile a tutti coloro che volessero intraprendere questo tipo di formazione grazie a delle borse di studio messe a disposizione da privati e ad una interessante iniziativa fortemente voluta dal Gonzaga Campus all’interno delle attività della recente fiera missionaria: la costituzione di un “fondo educazione”.

In Palermo 12 Italian and international young students are awarded the International Baccalaureate Diploma, unique in Southern Italy.
It is the dream of a Euro-Mediterranean education of Gonzaga Campus to broadly address the needs of the local and international community.
PALERMO – Starting from the strong commitment of 12 young people, for the first time a dream comes true of an international, Euro-Mediterranean education in Sicily and in Southern Italy: they are the first graduates of Gonzaga International School Palermo (ISP). Some of them have studied at ISP ever since 2008, the year in which the International School was founded by the Society of Jesus as a project of Istituto Gonzaga. In the Jesuits’ educational mission, long geared towards internationalism, the decision to open an IB international school in Palermo stems from the conscious determination to offer an important service to young people in the South and to whomever desires to accept the big challenge of an education based on multiculturalism, dialogue among religions and global citizenship.
These young people are female and male students from Italy, Bangladesh, Philippines, Sri Lanka, United States, Germany, Brazil.
The IB Diploma Programme of the international school, geared to students aged 16-18, was created in 1968 with the aim of fostering a world of peace and solidarity. Nowadays, it is widely recognized as a programme that guarantees admission to all major Italian and international universities. The only school in Southern Italy to be authorized by the International Baccalaureate, through the use of English as the main language of instruction and an active, involving pedagogy, ISP means to form open-minded, caring world citizens who are ready for the challenges of an increasingly global, interconnected society.
Gonzaga ISP is therefore an IB international school that offers a complete educational path, from 2 to 18 years of age and issues a prestigious high school diploma (according to Law n. 738 of 1986) which is recognized in Italy as a scientific or human science diploma, with validity for both enrollment in Italian and international universities and participation in public exams.
Francesco Salamone has talked to us about his experience, that very well sums up the main characteristics of ISP’s High School.
“In these years I have undertaken a very special path as, compared to Italian school it was structured in such a way to give us students a great deal of independence. We were offered the possibility of studying certain subjects with an advanced, insightful approach that made connections with the real world. For example, we undertook personal research projects on real world events. In my specific case, in Business Management I conducted research on motivational theories in the workplace, in which I considered companies from all over the world. There was great openness in teaching approaches –continues Francesco- towards other countries and world cultures; in fact, the various themes were addressed globally in a broader perspective of forming future global citizens. In this respect, we were also taught how to conduct a more thorough analysis and reflection on the possible avenues and solutions to global issues”.
Personalization, direct involvement in the learning and development process, openness to the world and different cultures are among the most distinctive traits of the educational project at Gonzaga International School Palermo.
In their studies, Diploma students have also practiced their social commitment. Helping those in need to become active world citizens, committed to improving society, is one of the foundations of the project. In fact, students participate in national and international volunteering activities in Kenya, Romania, and some local contexts.
“A further significant aspect was social involvement as part of our studies. Many of my classmates have had great volunteering experiences outside school. I did not have this opportunity because of the pandemic; however, I had an online volunteering experience with an American charity that supports grieving children and youth. Such an experience gave me a chance to learn how to engage in these forms of help. I will now continue studying to learn about broader systems and to try to respond starting from the youngest. For the future, I am about to leave for America as I will study Economics and Finance at UPenn Philadelphia “.
Father Denora: our school, a crossroads of people and cultures in the heart of the Mediterranean
“With these 12 fresh graduates of ours we are truly realizing a dream that pushes us to carry on with our mission. The beauty of the Sicilian land lies exactly in the encounter of different cultures in the heart of the Mediterranean – says Father Vitangelo Denora, General Director of Gonzaga Campus – which today can be further pursued with renewed courage and determination. Our strong desire is to attract students from all over the world -particularly from the South and the Mediterranean- to Sicily. As Jesuits, in our educational projects we strongly believe in the education of people who, with competence, conscience, compassion and commitment will endeavour to respond to the needs of the local and international society in a broad perspective. The IB Diploma Programme endows us with all the necessary tools to realize this ideal of ours”.
An opportunity open to all
In the last few years, the international school has strived to become accessible to a wider range of students who wish to undertake this type of education. This is thanks to scholarships being made available by private individuals and to an interesting initiative -strongly supported by Gonzaga Campus- within the activities of the latest Missionary Fair: the setting up of an “educational fund”.
“Today like at the beginning of our history, we have thought that the best service and charity we can provide to our world is to offer a good education to the new generations, a type of education that can be proposed to all – continues Father Denora. We believe that donating to this cause is an important cultural step that can bring new energy and resources for our youth and for a better world”.
