Il Diploma Program all’International School Palermo: un sogno diventato realtà
All’International School Palermo, dopo molti anni di insegnamento di programmi IB, siamo finalmente arrivati alla nostra meta desiderata: l’implementazione del Diploma Program. Non la definiremmo la nostra destinazione finale in quanto è solo l’inizio di un nuovo entusiasmante viaggio che ci vedrà coinvolti in molti aspetti diversi della vita dei nostri studenti.
Con il Diploma Program (DP) i nostri studenti non stanno solo studiando per prepararsi alle migliori università di tutto il mondo, ma stanno anche diventando membri attivi della comunità circostante. Sono attivi nell’aiutare gli altri durante le loro ore CAS, stanno già lavorando al loro saggio esteso e stanno imparando ciò che hanno scelto in modo da poter eccellere in questa società in continua evoluzione.
I nostri studenti hanno personale altamente qualificato e dedicato che li segue da vicino e li prepara con standard elevati per ciascuna delle loro materie. Tre di loro sono scelti a livello superiore, gli altri sono scelti a livello standard.
Queste scelte consentono ai nostri studenti di acquisire la proprietà e iniziare a vedere il loro futuro come qualcosa di tangibile. Il nostro orientamento verso il DP inizia nella nostra scuola superiore, dove, insieme ai professori, genitori e tutor aiutiamo gli studenti a riflettere e discernere per scegliere la giusta combinazione in base ai loro punti di forza e aree di interesse. Qui all’International School Palermo, poniamo anche particolare attenzione al progresso sociale, emotivo e fisico dei nostri studenti e teniamo riunioni regolari a diversi livelli per assicurare che il nostro servizio sia coerente e continuo. Il nostro Campus facilita l’enfasi che poniamo sul progresso includendo elementi della pedagogia ignaziana e della comunità dei gesuiti che aiutano i nostri studenti con attività di consapevolezza che si sono dimostrate estremamente preziose in questo momento difficile.
I nostri allievi e allieve non studiano solo “per” il Diploma, bensì anche “nel” Diploma, ossia in una cornice di esperienze che li formano a essere non solo cittadini attivi e attenti in un mondo sempre più complesso e mutevole, ma anche a instaurare un processo di apprendimento che durerà per tutta la loro vita. A questo scopo, il Diploma Programme pone un forte accento sul lato esperienziale dello studio, inteso come applicazione di competenze personali e accademiche alla gestione e alla possibile risoluzione di situazioni reali e concrete. Per esempio, nella classe di Business Management, gli studenti, di loro iniziativa, si sono iscritti a un business game a livello nazionale in cui hanno la possibilità di diventare veri manager e gestire una vera azienda nelle sue varie funzioni. In questo modo, essi coltivano abilità personali, spirito di iniziativa e una curiosità spontanea e immediata verso le questioni del mondo, dalle più “piccole” alle più “grandi”.
Anche nel quotidiano, tuttavia, i nostri allievi realizzano esperienze con visibilità forse minore, ma altrettanto ispiratrici. In CAS (Creativity, Action, Service), seppur con alcune restrizioni causate dalla pandemia, essi sviluppano progetti, spessi interamente pensati da loro stessi, di servizio alla comunità e alla nostra città. Ma anche una presentazione in classe su un pensatore, su uno scrittore, su un argomento di filosofia, di fisica o di letteratura facilmente diventa un’importante occasione di riflessione e di sviluppo delle proprie capacità analitiche e critiche, sempre con uno sguardo proteso verso il mondo.
A tre mesi dall’inizio di questa bellissimo cammino che segna per la nostra scuola l’ingresso nel futuro prossimo che avevamo pensato qualche anno fa, siamo al tempo stesso orgogliosi del risultato raggiunto ma consci del grande e importante lavoro che ci attende. In questa coscienza pesante eppure entusiasmante, ci confortano i sorrisi dei nostri studenti e la luce che vediamo nei loro occhi. Una luce di speranza e di crescita. Una luce che i loro studi nel Diploma Programme faranno brillare sempre di più.

The IB is mainly known for the final two years of school, the Diploma Programme. Here, at International School Palermo, after many years teaching IB programs we have finally arrived at our desired destination: the implementation of the Diploma Programme. I would not call this our final destination as it is just the beginning of a new exciting journey that will see us involved in many different aspects of our student’s lives. With the Diploma Programme (DP) our students aren’t only studying to get ready for top ranked universities all over the World, they are also becoming active members of their surrounding community. They are active in helping others during their CAS hours, they are already working on their Extended Essay and are learning what they have chosen to so they can excel in this ever-changing society. Our students have highly qualified and dedicated staff who follow them closely and prepares them with high standards for each of their subjects. Three of them are chosen at Higher Level, the others are chosen at Standard Level. These choices enable our students to gain ownership and start viewing their future as something tangible. Our orientation towards DP starts in our high school, where, together with teachers, parents and tutors, we help students reflect and discern to choose the right combination according to their strengths and areas of interest. At ISP, we also place particular attention to our student’s social, emotional and physical progress and have regular meetings at different levels to make sure our service is consistent and continuous. Our Campus facilitates the emphasis we place on progress by including elements of the Ignatian Pedagogy and Jesuit community who help our students with mindfulness activities which have proven to be extremely valuable in this difficult time.
Our pupils do not study just “for” the Diploma, but also“in” the Diploma, that is in a framework of experiences that train them to be not just active and involved citizens in an increasingly complex and changeable world, but also to set out on a learning path that will last for their whole lives. To this end, the Diploma Programme strongly emphasizes the experiential side of study, intended as the application of personal and academic skills to the management and possible solution of real and concrete situations. In the Business Management class, for example, students of their own accord have enrolled in a nationwide business game where they have the possibility of becoming true managers and manage a real company in all its functions. In this way, they cultivate personal skills, spirit of initiative and a natural, immediate curiosity towards world issues, from the “smallest” to the “biggest”.
However, also in daily life our students realize experiences with perhaps less visibility, but inspiring nonetheless. In CAS (Creativity, Action, Service), even with some restrictions caused by the pandemic, they carry out projects -often springing from their own initiative- of service to the community and to our city. But even a class presentation on a thinker, a writer, a topic in Philosophy, Physics or literature can easily become an important occasion to reflect and develop one’s analytical and critical abilities, with a constant eye to the world.
Three months into this wonderful path that thrusts our school in the near future we had envisioned a few years ago, we are both proud of our accomplishment and aware of the great and important work awaiting us. In this daunting yet enthusing awareness, we are comforted by our students’ smiles and the light we see in their eyes. A light of hope and growth. A light that their Diploma Programme studies will make brighter and brighter.
